By the way, I don’t own Yu Yu Hakusho or the characters.  But I did make up this story about them, so don’t sue (or flame) me!

Roses In Hiding by IcedFireRose

Prologue

You smile as you enter the park. It feels like coming home; reminding you of the woodlands in your hometown where you fled when things seemed to fall apart in her world. You ran there after every fight with your mom, after every rejection, and after every time you’d been let down. You felt safe there, felt loved and appreciated. To you, it was everything you’d lacked from your family at home. This park so reminded you of that place; but you knew that they had no connection. After all, Tokyo and (your hometown) were very far apart.

You stroll down the paved paths, silently adoring the beautiful scenery around you. You walked on for nearly two more miles when you spy a small dirt path nearly hidden between the brush. Your curiosity got the better of you as you passed by, then turned and examined it closer.

To enter the path, go to chapter one.

Chapter One: The Meeting

Walking into the denser part of the forest, you feel unafraid as you travel farther and farther
from the paved trail that you had started out on. You keep walking, stepping over roots and fallen branches while trying not
to get stuck on any trees (or worse, spider webs!), when you see a clearing about 30 feet ahead of you.
You are now moving faster, trying to find your way to the clearing. Your heart pounds as you near
the opening, watching as the trees around you thin out. Finally, you find yourself standing at the top of a beautiful hillside
                  with lush, green grass.
The gently sloping hill looked so serene as you stepped into the sunshine. It called to you and
begged you to sit and stay awhile. You obliged, wandering around until you found a spot that looked inviting. You took off
your shoes and reveled in the feel of the grass between your toes. You weren’t there long, however, before the rigors
of your last few days and the lack of sleep finally took hold of you. As you drifted off to dreamland, a small smile found
its way to your lips. A few minutes later, a bright flash of light startled you awake. A few seconds later you heard yelling.

“Urameshi! That could’ve killed me!” The first boy yelled.

“You’re the one who wanted to train, Kuwabara. Looks to me like we’re working on your agility today,
                  huh?” Chuckled a second boy.

“That’s not funny, Urameshi.” The boy, now identified as Kuwabara, replied.

“Well,” said Urameshi. “Let’s work on agility anyway. Race ya to the top of the hill and back
                  down again.”

“Shouldn’t we wait for Kurama and Shorty?”

“C’mon. Don’t tell me you’re scared of losing!”

                  “Course not!”

                  “Then get ready….”

                  “Urameshi, why can’t we wait?”

                  “Get set…”

“At least I don’t have to race Shorty this time.” Kuwabara half grumbled.

                  “GO!” Yelled Urameshi.

Sitting up now, you decided to watch the race. Suddenly, the racers came into your view. The two boys seemed to be
locked in a dead heat as they neared you.
Suddenly, a bright light flashed and you were knocked on your side by a tall red-haired girl and
a small boy with black hair that stood on its ends.

“Hey!” you cried, startling the two, as well as the racing boys. The racers switched directions and came
your way as you stood and brushed yourself off.

“I’m sorry,” Said the redhead (who you now realized was not a girl, but a very cute boy!), “I
didn’t see you there. Are you all right?”

You were just about to answer when the black-haired racer spoke up. “Kurama, Hiei! Hey!” he panted, “What
                  did pacifier-breath want?”
The orange-haired racer rushed to your side instantly. “Are you all right, pretty girl? They
                  didn’t injure you, did they?”

Finally, the other three pairs of eyes turned in your direction. You looked at all of them for a moment and the turned
your gaze back to the boy with the orange hair. “I’m fine. I was just taken off guard, that’s all.”

“Allow me to introduce myself: I am the great Kazuma Kuwabara!” he cried. The others with him just rolled
                  their eyes.

You nodded. “It’s very nice to meet you, Kazuma.”

“Oh, please…Call me Kuwabara.” He interjected.

“Okay, Kuwabara. My name is (Your name here).” You replied, blushing slightly.

Spurred on by a gentle nudge from the red-haired boy, Kuwabara continued the introductions. “This is Yusuke Urameshi,”
he said, pointing to the black-haired racer. “This is Kur--” He said before receiving an elbow to the stomach
from the short boy with the spiky hair. “I mean…This is Suuichi Minamino,” he said, pointing in the direction
of the boy with the red hair, who smiled at you. “And the shrimp over there is Hiei.” He said, finally pointing
nonchalantly to the boy with the spiky hair.

“Shrimp!?” Hiei said, giving Kuwabara the death glare and slowly stepping in his direction.  Kuwabara
chuckled nervously and then took off running, with Hiei not far behind him.

You nodded at the two boys that were left; Kurama and Yusuke, giving them a soft smile. You watched Hiei chase Kuwabara
down the hill for a little while before it dawns on you that you might be interrupting them in some way. You blush and quickly
                  reach for your shoes.

“What’s wrong, (Your name)? Is everything all right?” Yusuke asked when he saw what you were doing.

“I just--- realized that I should be getting back. Everyone’s probably worried about me as it is,”
as you slide on your other sneaker, you stand. “It was very nice to meet both of you and please tell Kuwabara and Hiei
                  that I said goodbye.”
They nodded and were just about to say their goodbyes when they heard Kuwabara shout.

                  “Hey! Watch that thing, Hie--”

“I’d better go get those two. Cya around, (Your name).” said Yusuke as he jogged down the hill.

You turned and began to walk back to the path that had brought you here, when you heard someone coming up behind you.
You turn and you see Suuichi walking up to you.

“I thought that you might like some company.” He said, falling into your step.

‘Wow…he’s cute!’ you thought to yourself. “Thanks, but I don’t want to take you
                  from your friends.” You reply.

“It’s really no trouble. I have to get home to my mother anyway,” He looked ahead at the trees. “Do
you know there’s a path back that way?” He pointed behind him.

You blushed. “No. But I came in this way.” You said, pointing to the path through the trees.

“Both ways lead back to the park, but I just thought that you might like to take the one least likely to get
sticks caught in your hair.” He said, retrieving a small piece of bark from your (Your hair color) locks. ‘He’s
thoughtful too! *Sigh*’ you think absently, as he takes his hand from your hair and tosses the piece of bark away.
